On November 29th 2019, the 16th “Top Ten Speech” Peking University finals were held in Beijing. Since this year marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the theme of this competition was “My country, My people”. It was co-organized by the Communist Youth League Peking University Committee and the Peking University Graduate Union. STL 1L student Wang Chenyu stood out in the competition and won the championship after three rounds of speeches. This is the very first time that a student from STL had won this championship.
From March 16-17, STL earned the second place in the Beijing Pre-Moot for the Willem C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. For individual prizes, Huang Shaowen won the Best Oralist in semi-finals and Zhang Fengming won the Best Oralist in the finals.
The team, formed of four 2L students, Cheng Jinghui, Huang Mingyu, Wang Yueying and Zhang Huanglan and coached by STL C.V. Starr Lecturer Louis Zhou, won the Team Tier One Award, Best Advocate (Zhang Huanglan) and Advocacy Award of Merit (Wang Yueying).
Guided by Associate Clinical Professor Nicholas Frayn, STL’s Public Interest Advocacy Clinic visited Myanmar to explore public interest legal issues in February 2019.
STL students had the opportunity to test their advocacy skills in competition this month through the 2018 STL Intramural Moot Court Competition. STL students were invited to join the competition by submitting an argument on behalf of one side in a fictional U.S. Supreme Court case.
STL LL.M. student Victor Contreras Kong from Chile recently was interviewed by the Nanyan Observer. Victor is in the first year of his LL.M. program and is the highest ranked fencer in Chile.
On June 8, members of STL’s Public Interest Law Foundation (“PILF”) held the “Fourth Annual PILF Auction.” PILF is a student-run organization devoted to promoting public interest law and the pro bono responsibilities of lawyers.
STL graduate Alejandra Tapia from Panama (LL.M. Class of 2016) was interviewed for an in-depth story on LL.M. programs in China.
STL Distinguished Professor of Practice Thomas Yunlong Man and 2L students Chen Chuang, Feng Yang and Wang Xianyi recently published a collection of articles in the Tribune of Social Sciences, a comprehensive bi-monthly Chinese-language journal.
