Distinguished faculty, honored guests, beloved family and friends, and my fellow graduates, Good morning! I am very honored to speak here today.

Before coming to STL, I was a student of Swahili, a less commonly spoken African language. My undergraduate experience as an editor at the East African Studies Center left me with one deep realization: the greatest barrier in cross-border cooperation often lies not in words or vocabulary itself, but in the deeper disparities of how rules are understood. That realization is what brought me to STL.

For me, undergraduate learning was a world of relative certainty. Words had fixed, unchanging definitions, grammar followed rigorous, predictable rules, and language exams had clear, standard answers. But when I stepped into STL, that sense of certainty was shattered. I was forced to confront a world of uncertainty, the discomfort of “I don’t know” and “I can’t figure it out”.

Looking back now, those very moments of being stumped and pushed to the edge became the ones I treasure most. Because they taught us that studying law is not about memorizing ready-made answers. It is about learning how to use logic and reason to carve out a path of thinking, inch by inch, even where there is no clear answer in sight. At some point, I came to a sudden realization: an STL classroom isn't just a place for legal training, it’s more like an art appreciation class. It taught us to appreciate the beauty of uncertainty, a kind of beauty that has no single correct answer but still deserves every ounce of our relentless pursuit.

Life itself, it turns out, is the same. Our generation will have to navigate a complex landscape that no previous generation has ever faced, building our path as we go. In recent years, words like “AI replacing basic jobs” and “growing geopolitical unrest around the world” have become common topics of daily conversation. And this graduation season, we have all truly felt the turbulence of these shifting tides. It may be the dozens of resumes we sent out that went unanswered, with no word in return. It may be that when we dare to dream big about our future paths, we are suddenly hit square in the face by the harsh realities of life.

Yes, “welcome to the real world!” All of us leap from the safety of the dock into the vast open ocean. Some of us may find ourselves carried by clear currents; others may drift into treacherous waters. When we are caught in surging waves, temporarily lost and fighting to stay afloat, what will sustain us across the sea?

是的,“Welcome to the real world!(欢迎来到真实的世界!)”

I think, in those moments, the memories of our time at STL will come flooding back. It may be a line from a professor or guest speaker at an STL lecture, suddenly ringing clear in your ears. It may be the muscle memory of staying calm and thinking critically under pressure, forged through those relentless rounds of questioning from our professors... What STL has given us is the ability to observe clearly and make sound judgments amid uncertainty, and the grit to find our own direction even when we are caught in a raging whirlpool.

Finally, I want to leave every single one of my fellow graduates with a phrase in Swahili: “Hakuna Matata (No Worries, Be Happy!)”. The real world is also a scenic tour! No matter where the tides of this era may carry us, we can still find joy in self-discovery and growth amid the current. Be happy captains of our own journeys. We may reach the far shore, or we may not. But along the way, don’t forget to admire the many colors of the ocean, and to savor the sensation of sea spray on your face, that most real feeling of being alive.

“The real world is also a scenic tour!(真实的世界,本就是一场风景之旅!)”

Congratulations, everyone, and happy graduation!
