The Energy Community held its 2019 Sustainability Forum in Vienna, Austria on 27 June. The event brought together national policymakers, international organisations, academic researchers, business representatives and civil society. The Energy Community is an international organisation composed of the European Union and non-EU Member States in Eastern Europe and the Caucasus, with the objective of harmonising energy law. In recent years, the work of the Energy Community has increasingly focused on climate change and the need to transition to low-carbon energy.
The Forum, with the theme of ‘Embracing a Decarbonized Future’, was an opportunity to assess the development of clean energy in the Energy Community region and to discuss key challenges in achieving the transition to sustainable energy. From STL, Assistant Professor Stephen Minas participated in the day’s discussions.
Participating in a panel session on the topic of ‘Investing in a Decarbonized Future in the Energy Community: Dream or Reality?’, Professor Minas discussed Chinese outbound energy investment trends, including within the Belt and Road, and also highlighted the opportunities for the European Union’s 2030 Energy and Climate Framework to stimulate clean energy investment.
Professor Stephen Minas’s research concerns novel transnational processes of law, policy and dispute resolution that address the emerging sustainable economy, focused on the nexus of climate change, finance, energy and technology.
