Dr Stephen Minas Participates in PKU Yenching Global Symposium 2022

The 2022Yenching Global Symposiumwas held during April 8-10. Hosted by Peking University’sYenching Academy, the Symposium is one of Asia’s leading conferences on China for students and young professionals, with around 300 delegates typically chosen from an applicant pool numbering over 5,000. This year’s Symposium examined how nations have and should balance their cultural, social, political, and economic responsibilities at home and overseas.

STL Associate Professor Stephen Minas participated in a Symposium session on ‘Tackling Climate Change in an Era of (Inter)nationalism’, joining a panel that included: Dr MA Jun, President of Institute of Finance and Sustainability, Adjunct Professor at Peking University National School of Development and Chairman of the Green Finance Committee of the China Society for Finance and Banking; Dr Zhang Shiqiu, Professor at Peking University’s College of Environmental Sciences and Engineering, Institute of Environment and Economy, member of the Scientific Advisory Panel for UNEP Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants (CCAC) and senior expert member of UNEP Technology and Economic Assessment Panel for implementing Montreal Protocol; and Sasha Sud, Director of Smart Cities with MaRS Partnerships, North America’s largest urban innovation hub. The session was chaired by Ann Chen, Director of Academic Programming at the Yenching Global Symposium.

The panel held a wide-ranging discussion covering the situation in climate negotiations after the Glasgow conference, China’s 30/60 climate targets, green finance, the role of subnational governments and non-state actors in climate policy and the linkages between climate policy and conservation of biological diversity. There was also time to respond to questions from Symposium delegates from both China and overseas. The Yenching Global Symposium has been held annually since 2016.
