Dear President HAI, Dean McConaughay, Judge He, distinguished faculty and staff, friends and family, and of course my fellow classmates:

Good afternoon.

My name is Zeyu. Today, I have the great honor to deliver this speech on behalf of the graduating class of 2022.

Standing here, watching the eyes of professors and peers, my mind flashed back to the moment when I was on call in first class of STL. Honestly speaking, I’m not well-prepared for this session, for the session of graduation. But instead of stammering in anxiety, I’d love to share with you my feeling at the moment and my understanding of graduation. For me, graduation means a closure and countless “goodbye”. It means the hypo in the classroom might be replaced by trivial matters in practices. It also means that my flimsy arguments stemming from the vacuous belief of justice and superficial comprehension of law eventually evolves into the chasm between the legal ideal and legal profession.

I have discussed with professors and my classmates about what kind of students should be considered as qualified STL alumni. Stereotypically, it seems to be accepted that STL students should have excellent academic performance, with brilliant moot court experience, and easily enrolled into one of the prestigious international law firms after graduation. But our growth experience just shows the other side of the coin. We might be frustrated by not getting an “A”. We would cry when we fail to break into out-rounds in moot court competition. We may constantly question our learning ability and our talents of legal study. And we could be extremely nervous in every single job interview no matter how many we have taken before. But at the end of the day, we dust ourselves off and put the disappointment and grievances aside, keep moving forward with a sense of mission. This is a true story about failure and frustration. It’s the vivid display of perseverance and determination. This is also the narrative which tells that the diversity is the unique charm of our school.

From the lay person to the law person, we are not only starting the new chapter of our lives, but also demonstrating how does the most innovative legal education shape our personalities and characteristics. STL weaponizes us with solid legal analytical skills and critical thinking habits. In Professor Mao’s class, we need to process information within limited time frame, adopting Anspruchs method. Even in China, which is commonly accepted as the civil law jurisdiction, professors guide us to pay attention to the precedents and observe the process of legal changes. STL facilitates us to observe the trajectory of the world in a brand-new perspective. Like the reminder from Professor Rudolph, we gain insight into values from judges’ selection of words in their opinions. The devil is in the details. STL labels us with the priceless identity as the member of legal community. As Professor Ho mentioned, we are stepping into a community with thousand-year history and deep intellectual tradition. STL hamstrings our belief toward justice. We got extremely encouraged when Professor Rosenbaum quotes that “[t]he arc of history is long, but bends towards justice”. STL trains us to practice professionally. We get the lessons on disciplined writing, on how to deal with conflict of interest in reality. We gradually develop the pursuit of excellence and recognize our roles of paying back to family, to the community and to our society.

Indeed, we have traveled a long way and we are ready to set forth for a new journey.

In search of the countless flashes of our cherished STL memories: getting prepared for the cold calls with the study partners in the mid-night, reviewing TNLP assignments over and over again before handing in on TWEN, mapping outlines in the brain to the last minutes before exam, also the days and nights going through the memos for moot court line by line with my dear teammates and our adorable coach.

These bits and pieces have never faded. Instead, they are valuable, rich and timeless.

I would like to thank my fellow classmates, for your inspiration and encouragement.

A sincere “Thank you” to our families and friends for their unconditional dedication and support. Thank you, my parents who have worked so hard. Thanks to my mentor who have been leading my growth all the time. And especially for my grandmother who just passed away, to whom I know I couldn’t make up for the care I have received from her.

Thank you, STL, for your patient instructions, for seeding the paramount legal goal in our hearts, for vindicating the unexplored tension between theory and practice, and empowering us with the strength to take responsibility and make collective contribution to our unity.

Last but not least, Happy Graduation, my dear classmates. I’m so proud to be one of you. Hope everything goes well.

Thank you.
