Bio:

Mengshi (Emma) Li is an alumnus of Peking University School of Transnational Law (Class of 2017). She interned for Chief Justice Ralph Gants upon graduation, and then joined Kirkland & Ellis Shanghai Office as a foreign legal consultant and worked there for almost four years. As a member of the firm’s Litigation team, she specialized in white collar crime investigations and defense. Emma is now a LL.M. student at Harvard Law School.

Brief Introduction:

Emma hopes to take this opportunity to share her basic understanding of what it means to study and work in the field of white-collar criminal law and regulatory compliance (focusing on the US and China). Unlike civil litigation or corporate transactions, this field has its unique features and is ever-growing in scope, complexity, and publicity. For instance, it is a really “muddy” area of criminal and administrative law, because it involves a lot of government discretion, while the court often has a very limited role to play. Also, there are a lot of extralegal elements (e.g., diplomatic) at play especially when the cases involve multiple foreign countries.

Emma herself is still new to the field, and she, like you, is still learning. But she would love to share her views on the challenges and excitements of working in this area. She insists that this be an informal and interactive chat time, and would love to hear any questions that you might have!
