On October 11, 2024, Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) hosted an insightful event in collaboration with the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (SIAC) as part of its Young SIAC (YSIAC) initiative. The seminar, titled “Education and Career Development of International Arbitration Practitioners”, offered an in-depth exploration of the pathways, skills, and opportunities for aspiring professionals in the field of international arbitration. The event was graced by notable leaders in arbitration, who shared their experiences and guidance with the STL community.
Opening Remarks
The event commenced with a welcome address by Professor Mark Feldman, Interim Dean of STL, setting the tone for what would be an enriching session on both the academic and professional facets of international arbitration. Professor Mark Feldman highlighted the significant growth and global reach of YSIAC and similar organizations, which provide invaluable training, mentorship, and networking opportunities for the next generation of arbitration practitioners. He also acknowledged the impact of younger professionals on the field, particularly in embracing innovation, diversity, and sustainability. Professor Mark Feldman concluded by recognizing STL alumni on the panel and warmly welcoming Ms. Lucy Reed, President of the SIAC Court of Arbitration, to attend the event.
Following the welcome, Ms. Gloria Lim, CEO of SIAC, delivered the opening speech. She highlighted Shenzhen’s role as a global hub of technology and innovation, noting the city’s rapid growth in international arbitration alongside its advancements in sectors like 5G and energy vehicles. Ms. Lim emphasized the strong relationship between SIAC and China, with Chinese businesses being key users of SIAC’s services over the past decade. She introduced the YSIAC platform, which connects thousands of members from over 100 jurisdictions, and underscored SIAC’s commitment to fostering professional development in arbitration. Ms. Lim also welcomed Ms. Lucy Reed and introduced SIAC colleagues who were present.
Dialogue and Q&A with Ms. Lucy Reed
A highlight of the event was the dialogue session featuring Ms. Lucy Reed, President of the SIAC Court of Arbitration. Moderated by Liu Xin, YSIAC Council Member, the discussion offered a deep dive into Ms. Reed’s illustrious career.
During the dialogue, Ms. Lucy Reed shared insights into her extensive career in international arbitration. She emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities, explaining how her interest in international law developed unexpectedly during a clerkship. She stressed the critical role of writing skills and broad legal training, cautioning young professionals not to specialize too early in arbitration, but instead develop a strong foundation in litigation and contract law.
Ms. Reed also reflected on her varied roles in both private practice and government, particularly her time at the U.S. State Department, where she valued collaboration but faced the challenges. In her advice to young lawyers, she highlighted the importance of developing people skills, understanding different legal systems, and mastering written advocacy.
Ms. Reed acknowledged that China’s growing role in international disputes will elevate the need for Chinese lawyers in arbitration, given the complexities of cross-border transactions. She concluded by advising young practitioners to approach teamwork diplomatically, respect cultural differences, and focus on gaining practical experience over academic credentials.
Panel Discussion: Career Development in International Arbitration
The panel discussion that followed was a comprehensive exploration of education and career paths in international dispute resolution. Moderated by Zhang Cunyuan, STL alumnus and Director & Head (China) of SIAC, the panel included an impressive lineup of professionals:
Luo Zhiqiang, Managing Partner at Hui Zhong’s Shenzhen office
Guo Shining, Partner at King & Wood Mallesons (KWM) in Shanghai and Shenzhen
Zhao Yuxian, Partner at Han Kun and STL Class of 2015 graduate
Vera Zuo, Senior Counsel at JT&N
Each panelist brought a unique perspective, sharing personal stories of their journey into arbitration and providing guidance on how young practitioners can forge successful careers in this highly competitive field. The discussion touched on key subjects, including making informed career choices, transitioning between different areas of law, and developing skills for long-term success. The panelists emphasized the importance of gaining solid training and practical experience, whether in international firms or local offices, while also acknowledging that both paths have their own advantages.
Networking, understanding the client’s business, and continuous learning were highlighted as essential components for career growth. The speakers also stressed that a legal career is a long journey, requiring patience, dedication, and persistence. Following the panel discussion, a Q&A session allowed STL students to engage with the panelists directly, deepening the conversation on career strategies. The panelists encouraged young professionals to stay adaptable and open to opportunities, regardless of their initial career direction.
Conclusion
The seminar concluded with closing remarks by Professor Mark Feldman, who thanked the speakers and participants for their valuable contributions. He emphasized the importance of continued engagement between educational institutions and professional bodies like SIAC in fostering the growth of future arbitration practitioners.
Overall, the YSIAC event at STL was a resounding success, offering students and young professionals an excellent opportunity to learn from some of the most experienced and respected figures in international arbitration. The engaging discussions and practical advice provided invaluable insights into the education and career development of arbitration practitioners, leaving attendees inspired and better equipped for their future careers.
