LHSS | The Responsibility to Suppress and Prevent Genocide under International Law

5月19日，受北京大学国际法学院（英文简称“STL”）邀请，Jinan Bastaki教授将于我院举办主题为“The Responsibility to Suppress and Prevent Genocide under International Law ”的线上公开讲座，本次讲座由我院Norman Ho教授发起并主持，欢迎感兴趣的师生积极参与！具体信息如下：

Jinan Bastaki is Associate Professor of Legal Studies at NYU Abu Dhabi. She focuses on public international law, forced displacement, human rights, refugee law, and citizenship. In 2018, her paper on nationality-based detention of migrants won the International Committee of the Red Cross and the International Institute of Humanitarian Law's (IIHL) best essay prize. Her work has appeared in major publications, including the Journal of Refugee Studies, Citizenship Studies, Refugee Survey Quarterly, and others.

The Genocide Convention obligates states not only to try alleged   perpetrators of genocide, but to prevent and suppress genocide as well. There   was little elaboration on what the responsibility to suppress and prevent   entailed until the 2007 Bosnia v. Serbia case at the ICJ. The Court detailed   third-state responsibility that has implications for current situations of genocide.
