On September 9, 2026, the Fifth Seminar of the International Commercial Expert Committee of the Supreme People’s Court of the People’s Republic of China (SPC) and the Reappointment Ceremony for Committee Members were held in Shanghai.
Professor Susan Finder, Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL), was reappointed as a member of the SPC’s International Commercial Expert Committee. Professor Peter Malanczuk, STL’s first resident JD faculty member, who served at STL until 2014, was also reappointed. Professor Mark Feldman, Interim
Dean of STL, was invited to attend the event and speak as a panelist during the thematic discussion.
A total of 37 members were reappointed to the International Commercial Expert Committee. The reappointments are intended to further strengthen expertise in international commercial adjudication, promote international exchanges and cooperation, and provide enhanced judicial services in support of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.
The thematic seminar was held under the theme “Integrating the Rule of Law, Advancing Collaborative Innovation, and Connecting the World through Intelligent Technologies.” The discussion brought together experts to explore emerging issues at the intersection of law, technology, and international cooperation.
In his remarks, Professor Feldman discussed both the opportunities and risks associated with the use of artificial intelligence in the judicial system. He emphasized the importance of striking an appropriate balance between the use of technology and the protection of parties’ rights. He also stressed the need to distinguish clearly between appropriate and inappropriate uses of AI in judicial proceedings.
