Dr Stephen Minas in ITU Panel Discussion on ICTs & Climate Change

STL Associate Professor Stephen Minas participated in a panel discussion on information and communications technologies (ICTs) and climate change, as part of the International Telecommunication Union's (ITU) World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2022. The ITU is a specialized UN agency concerning ICTs. The WSIS Forum is ‘the world’s largest annual gathering of the ‘ICT for development’ community’.

The session, held virtually on March 31, was moderated by Dr Suay M. Özkula (Research fellow, University of Trento) and the speakers were Dr Rose Mwebaza (Director, Climate Technology Centre and Network), Manfredi Caltagirone (Acting Head, International Methane Emissions Observatory, UNEP) and Dr Minas, participating in his capacity as a member of the UNFCCC Technology Executive Committee.

In his remarks, Dr Minas discussed the importance of digitalization in the energy sector and the role of ICTs in making finance more sustainable. Dr Minas emphasized that the ‘information society’ is a key enabler of the net-zero society.
