Progress and Challenges on the Agenda at Asia-Pacific Climate Week

Asia-Pacific Climate Week took place earlier this month in the Malaysian city of Johor Bahru, hosted by the Johor state government and in collaboration with the government of Malaysia. The event was one of the regional climate weeks mandated under the UN Climate Change Convention and organized with global partners from the United Nations system and World Bank Group.

At this year’s APAC Climate Week, STL Professor Stephen Minas participated in his capacities as a member of the UNFCCC Technology Executive Committee and a member of the Advisory Board of the UN Climate Technology Centre and Network (CTCN). Professor Minas spoke at events on artificial intelligence (AI) and climate action in the Asia-Pacificand on national systems of innovation. Professor Minas also participated in the forum for National Designated Entities – which coordinate national engagement with the UN bodies responsible for climate technology – and presented an update on the work of the UN technology bodies in advance of the COP28 conference in Dubai.

More broadly, APAC Climate Week featured a range of announcements and presentations on initiatives and agreements to accelerate responses to climate change in the region, including from governments, international financial institutions and the private sector. Many of the public sessions are available to be viewed online.
