Urban and rural climate innovation was the focus of the United Nations Climate Change Global Innovation Hub’s Eighth Systemic Innovation Workshop, held in Futian, Shenzhen on 9 September.
The Global Innovation Hub (GIH) is an initiative that provides space for dialogue and ideation of projects to develop climate and sustainability solutions. In addition to the Systemic Innovation Workshops, it convenes ad hoc working groups and hosts dialogues at the annual Conference of Parties (COP) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the Paris Agreement.
The workshop brought together a diverse group of experts from urban government, academia, business and international organisations and partnerships.
STL professor Stephen Minas gave one of several keynote speeches in his capacity as the vice chair of the UN Climate Technology Centre & Network Advisory Board. Dr Minas introduced the work of the UNFCCC Technology Mechanism, which includes the CTCN and the Technology Executive Committee. He discussed how the Technology Mechanism is contributing to climate innovation and outlined opportunities to collaborate with the climate technology institutions.
In his remarks, Dr Minas also commented on the significance of Shenzhen as a hub for technological innovation and mentioned some innovation initiatives at Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and STL, such as the Sustainability Innovation and Law Circle (SILC).
