Ray Worthy Campbell is a scholar of civil procedure and the intersection of law and technology. He is a Professor of Law at Peking University School of Transnational Law in Shenzhen, China, where he teaches Civil Procedure, Law and Innovation, and Cross-Cultural Negotiation. His current research focuses on the changing nature of the legal services marketplace in light of technological and economic innovations, with a particular emphasis on the impact of artificial intelligence on courts and the legal profession. He also writes on the doctrine of personal jurisdiction and on issues in transnational legal education. Professor Campbell consistently receives outstanding student evaluations, and in 2024 was awarded Peking University’s Shenzhen Campus “Excellent Teacher” award, the campus’s highest honor for teaching.
Professor Campbell’s scholarly writings have been published in numerous American and international law journals. Professor Campbell regularly is invited to make presentations on topics related to changes in the legal profession, artificial intelligence and the law, and legal education at conferences worldwide. Recent presentations include talks at the European Law Faculties Association conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, the Instituto de Empresa School of Law in Madrid, the International Legal Ethics Conference in Amsterdam, and the Ninth Annual Civil Procedure Workshop in San Francisco. He has also presented at conferences in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, India, and across China.
At Peking University, Professor Campbell has chaired the Appointments Committee, the Curriculum Committee, the Academic Integrity Committee, and the Academic Affairs Committee, and has served as a thesis advisor, guiding advisees to publish their theses as articles in U.S. law reviews.
Before embarking on his career in academia, Professor Campbell served as law clerk to U.S. Chief Justice Warren Burger of the United States Supreme Court, as a law clerk to Judge Malcolm Wilkey of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, as a litigation partner in the multinational law firms of Kirkland & Ellis and Jenner & Block, and as Chairman and CEO of HarmonyCentral.com, Inc., a leading Internet resource for musicians. Before attending law school, he worked as a political and federal courts reporter for the Nashville Banner.
Professor Campbell received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif and served as Notes Editor of the Virginia Law Review. He received his undergraduate degree from Yale College, where he served as Editor in Chief of the Yale Daily News Magazine.
