Mrs. Xiaoping Wu is a Professor from Practice at the Peking University School of Transnational Law. Her teaching and research focus on international intellectual property (IP) law, Chinese IP law, and the emerging IP challenges presented by new technologies.
Professor Wu possesses decades of extensive professional experience in addressing IP legal and policy issues, with expertise across both national and international contexts, as well as in the private and public sectors. From 2002 to 2024, Professor Wu served as a Counsellor and a Legal Affairs Officer in the Intellectual Property Division of the World Trade Organization (WTO), where her work primarily addressed policy, legal, and technical issues related to the implementation of the WTO Agreement on Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS Agreement). Her specialization encompassed patent-related issues, with a focus on TRIPS flexibilities, standard essential patents (SEPs), the protection of genetic resources, technology transfer, and the analysis of patent landscape. Throughout her time at the WTO, Professor Wu was also responsible for a wide range of IP training programs, including the WIPO-WTO joint colloquium for global IP teachers, held from 2007 to 2023.
Prior to joining the WTO, Professor Wu served as an Assistant Judge in the Intellectual Property Tribunal of the Shanghai Intermediate Court. Additionally, Professor Wu practiced as an attorney-at-law at the Kangda Law Firm (Shanghai) where she provided legal representation and counsel in the field of IP litigation.
