The webinar was held by the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration (“SCIA”), which was previously known as the South China International Economic and Trade Arbitration Commission. The audience included arbitrators, lawyers, legal affairs practitioners and scholars. In the presentation, Professor Feldman addressed key developments with respect to substantive obligations under investment treaties, the interpretation of such obligations under international law, as well as distinctive aspects of investment arbitration practice.

As a leading scholar of international economic law rights and obligations, Professor Feldman serves as an SCIA Arbitrator. Among his many other hats, Professor Feldman also serves as Global Associate at the National University of Singapore Centre for International Law, as vice chair of the Institute for Transnational Arbitration (ITA) Academic Council, and as a member of the ITA Executive Committee.

SCIA was established in 1983 as the first arbitration institution in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao region after China’s reform and opening up. In the past 37 years, it has actively promoted the innovative development of China’s international arbitration within the Special Economic Zone of Shenzhen. Today, it provides the arbitration and mediation services for up to 119 countries and regions worldwide.

SCIA and STL have long had a strong relationship with SCIA offering internship and work opportunities for STL students.

As both institutions are based in the Shenzhen Greater Bay Area, SCIA and STL are expected to further collaborate together to promote innovative solutions to some of the legal problems that might arise in this unique Pearl River area.
