Professor Nitzan Shilon’s Students Bridge the Gap Between Theory and Practice During Shenzhen Stock Exchange Visit

On December 26, students from Professor Nitzan Shilon's Corporate Finance class embarked on an enlightening visit to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, where they connected theoretical knowledge with real-world experience. This unique opportunity included a guided tour of the exchange’s museum and an engaging meeting with senior staff from the International Department.

The visit allowed students to delve into critical aspects of corporate finance in a practical setting. During the meeting, students posed insightful questions about market efficiency, regulatory structures, and participation of international investors, which sparked meaningful discussions with the exchange staff. The conversation also focused on the incorporation of advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, in promoting fair and efficient trading practices.

Professor Shilon emphasized the unique characteristics of the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, highlighting its promising future bolstered by impressive price discovery process supported by its rapid growth and ranking 3rd in the world in terms of liquidity. He also cautioned investor protection aspects due to the exchange disproportionate retail-intensive investor base and informational asymmetries. The discussions underscored the exchange's efforts to build on its strengths and to implement remedial policies to address its weaknesses.

Through this experiential learning opportunity, students gained valuable insights into the balance between free markets and regulatory measures, reinforcing the importance of creating an environment conducive to efficient and fair securities trading. The visit proved to be a significant complement to their academic journey, bridging the gap between theory and practice in the dynamic world of finance.
