Beside the banks of the Dasha River, in the prime of our youth; at the base of the Tanglang Mountains, our spirits remain ever young. As time swiftly passes, we find ourselves reunited, the allure of law enduring through the ages. On October 20, 2024, Peking University School of Transnational Law (STL) celebrated its 16th Anniversary Alumni Conference.
This momentous event was not only a magnet for the enthusiastic participation of numerous alumni but also extended an open invitation to all faculty and students on campus. It served as an invaluable platform for alumni, teachers, and students to engage in meaningful exchanges, to learn from one another, and to collectively envision a promising future.
On the day of the celebration, the sun bathed the campus by the Dasha River in a warm glow, and the air was thick with the festive spirit of the school’s anniversary. At the stroke of 9:00 a.m., the 16th anniversary alumni celebration commenced with great enthusiasm.
The event was elegantly hosted by He Aidi, the student from class of 2023. The proceedings began with a heartfelt welcome speech by Executive Dean Professor Mark Feldman, who took a moment to reflect on the illustrious 16-year journey of STL. He extended his gratitude to all alumni and the entire academic community for their unwavering support and commitment.
Professor Feldman highlighted STL’s dedication to nurturing legal professionals with a global perspective and international competitiveness. He underscored the institution’s vital role in developing foreign-related legal talents for China and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. With a tone of determination, he pledged to continue striving to advance the school’s various initiatives and to uphold its mission of excellence in legal education.
President Liu Xiaochun of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration took to the podium and delivered an address filled with praise. He commended STL for its exceptional contributions to legal education and research, highlighting the school’s commitment to excellence.
He announced that the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration is committed to further supporting STL’s growth, with a shared goal of nurturing legal professionals who possess a global vision, an enterprising spirit, and superb skills. These individuals are essential for the continued development of a more open and innovative China.
In a gesture of this collaborative spirit, the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration made a generous donation to establish the Shenzhen International Arbitration Scholarship. This scholarship is designed to provide financial support and encouragement to students pursuing their dreams in the field of foreign-related legal studies, further cementing the partnership between the arbitration institution and STL in their joint mission to shape the legal minds of the future.
Professor Mark Feldman presented the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration with the “Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School Education Support Contribution Award” on behalf of Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School. This award was a token of appreciation for the arbitration court's significant contributions to the educational endeavors of the school.
Following this, the master of ceremonies proceeded to announce the distinguished recipients of the inaugural Shenzhen International Arbitration Scholarship. Dean Liu Xiaochun was then invited to the stage to personally present the scholarship certificates to the student representatives. This ceremony not only celebrated the academic achievements of the recipients but also underscored the robust support from the legal practice community for the development of future legal professionals with a focus on foreign-related law. The event underscored the shared commitment to fostering a new generation of lawyers equipped to navigate the complexities of an increasingly globalized legal landscape.
Alumni Zhou Bin, the first president of Peking University School of Transnational Law Alumni Association, introduced the preparations for the change of the board of directors and announced the list of the second board of directors of the School of Transnational Law Alumni Association. Based on the active registration of alumni and the recommendation of the preparatory group, a total of 52 directors were determined, including 1 president, 1 secretary general, 7 vice presidents, and 8 deputy secretaries general (please go to the end of the article for a detailed list). Next, Executive Dean Mark Feldman issued letters of appointment to the representatives of the second board of directors. The new president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, Alumni Gu Dai, expressed her gratitude for the work of the previous board of directors, and said that on this basis, she will further work to strengthen the connection between alumni and between alumni and the school, and provide alumni with opportunities for mutual communication and mutual assistance, so as to better serve the development of alumni.
During the tea break and group photo session, alumni, teachers and students gathered together to recall the past, revisit the campus days and talk about the bright future. Everyone said that STL is a warm big family and they will remember this deep friendship no matter where they go.
At 10:30 a.m., the first “Alumni Growth Initiative” lecture officially began. Professor Wang Jun from China University of Political Science and Law was invited as the speaker to conduct an in-depth discussion on the theme of "The Current Situation and Problems of China’s Corporate Capital System".
Professor Wang, with his profound academic background and rich practical experience, introduced the origin and changes of China’s corporate capital system, including the experience of corporate cleanup and rectification and the development of the past 20 years, and analyzed the outstanding characteristics of the current capital system from the aspects of capital formation and capital compensation. Professor Wang gave a detailed interpretation based on the latest legislative dynamics. The lecture was easy to understand with theoretical depth and had a close connection with reality, which made teachers and students present deeply inspired.
The “Alumni Growth Initiative” will be committed to creating three platforms: first is a platform that focuses on alumni growth and where alumni can often return, share and improve; second, a platform for alumni exchanges and mutual assistance; and third, a platform for alumni to communicate with the industry. The school plans to regularly invite senior experts from the practical and academic circles to share valuable experience and provide alumni with a series of special lectures that closely follow industry trends, delving into practical hotspots, so as to help alumni keep up with the times and maximize their personal value and social contribution. With the continued development of such activities, it will provide strong support for the growth of more legal professionals.
The successful holding of the alumni homecoming conference and the first “Alumni Growth Initiative” lecture event is not only an affectionate look back at the school’s 16-year glorious journey, but also a witness to the high-quality development of the school, and a beautiful vision for the future. The hard work of the Alumni Council has laid a solid foundation for the development and growth of our alumni association. Every step of the school’s development is inseparable from the care and support of alumni. We believe that with the joint efforts of all alumni, teachers and students, STL will continue to uphold the spirit of openness and inclusiveness, deepen international cooperation and exchanges, continuously optimize the talent training model, and strive to build a highland of legal education with global influence, and make greater contributions to the construction of the rule of law in China and even the world.
